Daikin and MGTC Advance Sustainable Cooling Through Refrigerant and Resource Recovery - Daikin Malaysia

Kuala Lumpur, 9 October 2026 — Daikin Malaysia Sales & Service Sdn. Bhd. (Daikin Malaysia) and Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC) are strengthening efforts to advance sustainable cooling practices through a holistic approach that combines better indoor air quality, smarter air-conditioning operation, and responsible refrigerant management.

Anchored by the theme “MGTC Sustainable Refrigerant & Resources Recovery,” the initiative highlights the importance of looking beyond the energy efficiency of air-conditioning systems towards the full lifecycle of cooling — from how systems operate and improve indoor environments, to how refrigerants and resources are managed at the end of their service life.

A key focus is refrigerant circularity, where refrigerant from existing air-conditioning systems is recovered instead of being released into the atmosphere. The recovered refrigerant is subsequently sent to a Refrigerant Reclamation Center for proper processing and potential reuse, helping to reduce environmental impact while supporting a more circular approach to refrigerant management.

Through the recovery programme, 77.48 kg of R134A refrigerant was recovered, equivalent to approximately 110,796.4 kg of CO₂ emissions avoided, or the estimated carbon absorption of 4,617 rain tree years.

In recognition of this sustainability milestone, Daikin Malaysia presented the “Sustainable Refrigerant & Resources Recovery Certification” to MGTC during the certification presentation ceremony. The certification acknowledges MGTC’s commitment to responsible refrigerant management and environmental sustainability, while highlighting the importance of industry collaboration in advancing resource recovery practices and reducing the environmental impact of cooling systems.

The initiative also demonstrates how sustainability can be integrated throughout the operation of cooling systems. Through centralised control and smart optimisation, building operators can manage air-conditioning operations, monitor system performance in real time and use operational data to make informed decisions. This enables cooling systems to operate more effectively while supporting long-term system performance.

Beyond system efficiency, the initiative recognises that sustainable cooling should also contribute to healthier indoor environments. Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) solutions, including fresh air ventilation, air purification and filtration, humidity control and continuous fresh air supply, can help create cleaner and more comfortable spaces for building occupants.

“True sustainability considers the entire cooling lifecycle — from creating healthier indoor environments to optimising system performance, and ultimately, managing resources responsibly when systems are upgraded. This is where the collaboration between Daikin and MGTC demonstrates a more holistic approach to sustainable cooling,” said Mr Chan Hon Leong, General Manager (Marketing & Service) of Daikin Malaysia Sales & Service Sdn. Bhd.

The initiative reflects the growing importance of closing the loop on cooling — recovering valuable resources, reducing emissions and extending the environmental benefits of efficient cooling beyond the operation of the equipment itself.

As Malaysia continues to pursue its sustainability and decarbonisation ambitions, initiatives such as this demonstrate how the cooling industry can contribute through practical solutions that connect technology, operational efficiency, resource recovery and environmental responsibility.
